NC State Continues On Path To ACC Indoor Championships
1/22/2015 12:00:00 AM | Track
On Friday and Saturday, the Wolfpack track and field program will return to action as it continues to earn qualifying marks for the ACC Indoor Championships. A portion of the team will travel to Blacksburg, Va., for the Hokie Invitational while another group will head down to Clemson, S.C., for the Bob Pollock Invitational.
In ACC rankings, a myriad of Pack athletes are ranked in the top twenty of their respective events, while other student-athletes are beginning to earn national marks.
Distance Debuts:
This weekend will mark the first meet that many of the long distance runners will compete this season.
After a successful cross country season where the women's team set the record for NCAA Championship appearances at 28, the team is now ready to compete on the track.
Many of the distance runners will focus on off events as individuals are searching for multiple qualifying marks. Off events are events that the competitor does not primarily compete in, but competing in these events can still produce strong results.
Earning qualifying marks early in secondary events will allow the student-athletes time to focus on their best in events later in the season.
The distance runners will head to Rector Fieldhouse, to get a chance to compete on the special banked track design, while the long sprinters and throwers will join them at Virginia Tech.
Pack Jumpers:
After last year's success at Clemson's Rock Norman Track & Field Complex, many of the Pack jumpers are returning to the venue in hopes of another strong performance.
At the 2014 Bob Pollock Invitational, Jonathan Addison and Amara Bell set personal bests at the meet while Elizabeth Shuman won the women's high jump. The short sprinters will join the jumpers in Clemson.
Last Time Out:
The Pack had a successful meet at the Virginia Tech Invitational as many athletes continued to improve on their marks and a few athletes soared into national rankings.
Alexis Perry set national marks in the 60m hurdles and long jump. Her mark of 20'10.00" in the long jump is now tied for the second best jump in national rankings. Perry earned another top-five national ranking after a finish of 8.24 in the 60m hurdles.
Jonathan Addison also finished with a top-five national mark after a long jump of 24'10.00", while Javonne Antoine in the triple jump, and Jule Rich in the weight throw cracked the national top-50 lists in their respective events.
Geiger's Expectations:
"We're trying to get marks to get in the ACC Championships and for a few we want to get marks for the NCAA Championships. It's all a process and we're trying to prepare ourselves for late February."
