GREENSBORO, N.C., - Austin Powell was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Tennis Player of the Week as announced by the league office on Tuesday afternoon. During NC State's opening weekend, the 51st-ranked player in the nation won three singles and two doubles matches.
Powell opened his season by defeating Northwestern's Logan Staggs in straight sets (6-4, 6-2). His victory was crucial as the Pack edged out a big 4-3 win over the Wildcats. On Sunday, he continued his fine form by defeating No. 76 Gijs Linders of Michigan State (6-4, 6-2) and Kert Kilumets of NC Central (6-4, 6-3).
In doubles action, Powell and teammate Simon Norenius won two matches at the No. 2 doubles position. The duo defeated Sam Shropshire and Logan Staggs of Northwestern (6-2) and Mac Roy and Michael Dube of Michigan State (6-2).
Powell highlighted the Pack's strong opening weekend that included wins over No. 34 Northwestern, No. 63 Michigan State, and NC Central.
"His performance is a byproduct of his preparation. His preparation is very good," said head coach Jon Choboy. "In everything he does, he is a professional. If you watch him get ready, he has everything ready on his bench. He is preparing all the time for what lies ahead. He was challenged like everyone else but his preparation allowed him to succeed."
