LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The NC State women's basketball team (11-6, 2-2 ACC) endured its second ACC road loss of the season on Wednesday night, narrowly falling at No. 4 Louisville (16-1, 4-0 ACC) by a final score of 65-58.
NC State would trail by as many as 17 points in the second half, but would battle back to pull within four (55-51) with just 4:11 to play before the Cardinals scored 10 of the game's final 17 points.
Len'Nique Brown-Hoskin led the way for the Wolfpack on Wednesday evening, recording her third career double-double with 18 points (game high) and 10 rebounds. She was joined in double figures by Dominique Wilson (13 points) and Miah Spencer (10).
"I'm proud of the effort in the second half, but I'm ticked off about the way we showed up in the first half," said head coach Wes Moore. "We looked like deer in the headlights in that first half. In the second half, we came out and competed with some confidence."
The Wolfpack was without the services of regular starter Krystal Barrett and McDonalds High School All-American honorable mention Chloe Jackson, both of whom are out with injuries. Despite having a short roster, NC State was able to hold the No. 10 scoring team in the NCAA well below its season scoring average of 80.4 points per outing.
Louisville's Sara Hammond (13 points and 10 rebounds) recorded a double-double, while teammates Mariya Moore (17 points) and Shawnta' Dyer (11) also scored in double figures.
NC State led 6-2 early, but a 20-0 run by the Cardinals over 8:55 put the hosts comfortably in front at 22-6. Junior forward Carlee Schuhmacher broke this streak when she hit a mid-range jumper with 6:47 remaining in the first half.
State pulled within 13 points (32-19) at the halftime break by going on a 9-5 run of its own during the final 4:14 of the first half. Brown-Hoskin led the Wolfpack offensively in the opening 20 minutes with seven points.
The Wolfpack outscored the Cardinals by a 39-33 margin in the second half, and despite trailing by 17 points on multiple occasions, would pull within four when a Chelsea Nelson layup capped a 9-0 Wolfpack run with 4:11 to play in the contest.
NC State will return to action on Sunday, Jan. 18 at Wake Forest. Tip-off between the Wolfpack and Demon Deacons is set for 2 p.m. from Winston-Salem, N.C.
