MOMENTS OF THE MATCH
- The Wolfpack (3-3-2, 0-2-1 ACC) built a 2-0 lead by the early second half, playing some of its best soccer to date. Travis Wannemuehler sparked what looked to be a magic night for the Pack, on an assist from Nick Surkamp, lifting State to a 1-0 lead with this terrific strike in the 23rd minute:
- After holding a 1-0 lead through the half, NC State's Zach Knudson knifed through the Virginia Tech (6-3, 2-1) defense in the 52nd minute for his third goal of the year, joining Surkamp and Michael Bajza for the team lead. Knudson's run made it 2-0, but the Hokies responded suddenly.
- The crucial 59th minute pivoted on a misplay by the Wolfpack defense, allowing a long ball into the no-man's land between keeper and back line. A lone Hokie attacker found his way to the edge of the box with a chance at State's empty net. Matias Fracchia's tackle earned a red card from the referee, and set up a penalty kick that slashed the deficit to 2-1. Playing a man down, the Pack quickly allowed the equalizer in the 60th minute.
- NC State generated chances down the stretch, and played valiantly in the back, most notably Matt Ingram's header at the goal line as the Hokies advanced late, but the result went to Virginia Tech on a 90th minute score by Som Essome. The Pack scratched for the equalizer over the remaining 46 seconds to no avail.
