RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State softball team will have its final tune-up before postseason play begins when it travels to Charlotte for a doubleheader on Saturday, May 3. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m. with the second game to follow.
The Wolfpack owns a 13-5 advantage in the all-time series against the 49ers, including a doubleheader sweep in 2013. The Pack won the first game of a twin bill in Raleigh, 2-0, before taking the second game, 10-3.
State has played nine games against in-state opponents this season and boasts an 8-1 record in those contests. The squad’s lone defeat came last weekend at North Carolina, but despite the loss the Pack won two of three games to win the series.
Renada Davis has been red-hot at the plate recently for the Wolfpack and is currently on a six-game hitting streak. Over the last six games, the junior shortstop has 10 hits, nine runs scored, five runs batted in (RBI) and four home runs. She enters the weekend with 47 career home runs just two shy of the program record of 49 set by Jen Chamberlin.
In the circle, junior pitcher Emily Weiman is approaching career milestones as well as she is tied for the program record in complete shutouts for a single season with 11 and needs just one more to become the only player to have 12 in a season. Her 11 shutouts are also tied for third in the NCAA along with three other pitchers.
NC State pitchers have been at their best in the last few innings of the game as the Pack is 24-0 when leading after five innings of play. The squad is also a perfect 27-0 when recording more hits than its opponent.
SCOUTING CHARLOTTE
The Charlotte 49ers enter Saturday’s doubleheader with a record of 20-26 on the year, including a 10-13 mark in Conference USA action. In the squad’s most recent outing last weekend, it lost the rubber match of a three-game set against Marshall.
Jackie Kleinsmith leads the team offensively with 46 hits on the year and a .336 batting average. Samantha Slade is second on the 49ers with a .331 clip and 45 hits, including seven home runs.
On the mound, Lexi Betancourt paces the group with a 19-13 record, highlighted by 29 games started and 24 complete games. She has thrown 206.1 innings this season and allowed 66 earned runs to compile a 2.24 ERA.
