Track & Field Set to Open Outdoor Season

RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State track and field team will open its 2014 outdoor season, Mar. 21-22, at the Carolina Relays in Chapel Hill, N.C. The meet, hosted by UNC at the Fetzer Field/Belk Track, will also feature ACC foes Duke and Pittsburgh along with East Carolina, Temple and unattached individual competitors.
Wolfpack throwers Nicole Chavis and Tremanisha Taylor are coming off a pair of All-American performances last weekend at the NCAA Indoor Championships in Albuquerque, N.M.
Chavis launched a personal-best and NC State indoor record of 69’08.00” in the weight throw to finish in sixth-place and earn first-team All-American honors. Taylor took home a second-team All-American award in the shot put with a 12th-place finish. Taylor's throw of 52'11.00" placed highest among the Atlantic Coast Conference competitors in the field of 16, and gave the Henderson, N.C. native the second All-American honor of her career.
Overall, NC State took part in 12 indoor meets on the year, earning a total of 52 first-place finishes, including 31 on the women's side and 21 on the men's side.
Chavis led the State women with a team-high five first-place finishes, while sophomore Jonathan Addison (multi-events) and Jule Rich (throws) each had four first-place finishes to lead the men.
As a whole, 27 different student-athletes garnered a first-place finish on the year for the Wolfpack (17 women, 10 men).
Sophomore SeQuoia Watkins (throws) competed in a team-high 16 events, while Addison totaled a men's team-high of 14 events.
On a national scale, the Wolfpack had six student-athletes ranked 34th or better in their respective event, including five in the top 26.
The meet will begin Friday at 5 p.m. with the last event set to kick-off at 6:35 p.m. Action will continue on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. and is expected to finish close to 5 p.m.
