CLEMSON, S.C. – Just two days after being named to the Wade Watch List, senior center Markeisha Gatling of the No. 10 NC State women’s basketball team (21-3, 8-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) has been named to the 2014 Naismith Trophy Women’s Midseason Top 30 List.
Gatling has had a fantastic senior season for NC State, averaging 17.2 points and 6.7 rebounds per game. She has held the highest shooting percentage in the country since Dec. 22, 2013, and has scored in double figures 23 straight times.
The Naismith Trophy presented by AT&T is awarded annually to the men’s and women’s college basketball players of the year.
Each year, the Atlanta Tipoff Club’s Board of Selectors chooses the 50 pre-season “Naismith Watch” list candidates as well as the mid-season team of 30 candidates. The Naismith voting academy narrows that group down to four finalists who will make up the final ballot. The voting academy, comprised of leading basketball journalists, coaches, and administrators from around the country, bases its criteria on player performance throughout the season.
NC State will next be in action on Thursday, Feb. 13 at Clemson. Due to winter weather in the area, a tip-off time is still being determined.
