RALEIGH, N.C.- NC State swimming and diving senior Stephen Coetzer will swim as a member of the South African National Team at the 2014 Short Course World Swimming Championships Dec. 3-7 in Doha, Qatar. He is slated to compete in the men’s 100 and 200 backstroke events.
More than 1,100 swimmers from 171 countries will compete in the five-day top-level showdown inside the Hamad Aquatic Center.
A dual citizen between South Africa and the United States, Coetzer secured his spot on the national team after capturing titles in the 100 and 200 back events at the South African Short Course National Championships in August.
Last season, Coetzer earned an honorable mention All-America honor in the 200 back at the NCAA championships. At the ACC Championships, he earned a silver medal in the 200 back and set the conference and program records in the preliminaries of the 200 back.
As Coetzer competes in the World Championships, the NC State swimming and diving team will compete in the AT&T Winter National Championships in Greensboro, N.C. Dec. 3-6 at the Greensboro Aquatics Complex.
