Pack Falls at Princeton in 5-3 Shootout

PRINCETON, N.J. – Despite one of its best offensive outputs of the 2014 campaign, the NC State women’s soccer team concluded its season with a 5-3 loss at Princeton on Tuesday night. Senior midfielder Jessica Baity led the Pack’s offensive effort, scoring a career-high two goals in the match.
Baity ends her NC State career with five total goals (three this season) and two assists. She and the rest of the 2014 senior class—a group which recorded an average GPA of 3.52 and 14 semesters on the Dean’s List—closed out their careers in the Pack’s final match of the season.
“We could have scored seven or eight tonight, but Princeton could have had 10 or eleven,” said head coach Tim Santoro. “It was an open, attacking game, and though we had a few major defensive breakdowns, we created a lot of opportunities and it was good to score some goals and have that positive.”
Throughout the year, the Pack was plagued with injuries which prevented second-year head coach Tim Santoro from starting his first choice XI in a single one of the team’s 19 matches. State lost 2013 leading goalscorer and ACC Freshman Team member Jackie Stengel to a knee injury in early September and was also without the services of eight additional significant contributors throughout the course of the year.
In a wide open first half which featured four goals, the Tigers took a 3-1 advantage. Princeton got onto the board in the 17th and 22nd minutes, quickly earning a 2-0 advantage in a short span of time.
The Wolfpack would answer back in the 25th minute when Jenna Kalwa scored her first goal of the season. The Penn State transfer ripped a free kick from just barely on the attacking side of midfield and caught Princeton’s goalie completely by surprise, sneaking it just underneath the crossbar to halve the deficit.
Princeton (7-5-3) would further extend its advantage on each side of halftime, scoring in the 44th and 52nd minutes to make it 4-1.
Yet Baity and the Wolfpack (2-15-2) were not done. Thanks to a gorgeous chipped service by Franziska Jaser, Baity found herself in a one-on-one situation with the goalkeeper in the 59th minute. The native of Yadkinville, N.C., took a touch and slotted her shot off the far post and into the back of the net to make it 4-2. Just minutes later, Dayna Tomayko was taken down on a clear scoring chance inside the Princeton area to earn a penalty for the Pack, its first of the season. Baity stepped up to the spot and calmly beat the ‘keeper to her left side to pull State within one goal.
“Her last game was typical of her,” Santoro said of Baity. “It embodied what she is all about. She worked hard on both ends of the field, scored two goals, and really played well.”
Princeton would bring the match to its final score of 5-3 in the 69th minute when Nicole Loncar scored her second goal of the evening, a header to the far post.
