NEW ORLEANS – The NC State women’s basketball team (4-1) endured its first defeat of the 2014-15 season on Monday night, falling at Tulane (4-0) by a final score of 60-51.
The Wolfpack was held to its lowest shooting percentage of the season, going 16-52 from the field (.308) and 5-16 (.313) from three-point range. From the charity stripe, State was able to connect on 14 of 18 (.778) free throw attempts.
Len’Nique Brown-Hoskin led the way offensively for the Red-and-White, scoring 14 points on 6-14 shooting. The senior captain also collected a team-high six rebounds throughout the contest. Teammate and fellow captain Miah Spencer joined her in double figures with 11 points.
Kolby Morgan scored a game-high 15 points for Tulane and was joined in double figures by teammates Jamie Kaplan (13 points) and Danielle Blagg (12). The Green Wave shot 21-51 (.412) from the field in the contest. The Wolfpack was able to hold the hosts to a meager 3-17 (.176) success rate from beyond the arc.
Both sides struggled from the field in the first half, with Tulane edging out to a 24-20 lead at the end of the first 20 minutes. Despite going on a scoring drought of 9:12 during the opening frame, the Pack played strong defense to prevent the Green Wave from pulling away as the half came to a close.
At halftime, an officiating error was realized. Ashley Williams’ two made free throws (non-shooting foul) with 27 seconds remaining in the first half were awarded in error, as Tulane had committed six team fouls instead of the necessary seven to force a one-and-one situation.
The officials removed the points from NC State and instead started the second half with Tulane holding a 24-18 advantage.
Despite this unexpected setback, State started the second half on a tear by scoring 10 of the first 13 points to take a 28-27 lead with 15:15 to play in the game. The Pack would obtain another one-point advantage (30-29) less than a minute later, but this would serve to be its last lead of the contest.
Tulane would stretch its lead to as many as 11 points with 3:36 to play before ultimately earning the 60-51 victory.
The Wolfpack travels to Freeport, Bahamas, on Tuesday morning to compete at the 2014 Junkanoo Jam. At the competition, NC State will play George Washington (Nov. 28 at 1 p.m.) and either Purdue or Texas Tech (Nov. 29 at 1 or 3:15 p.m.).
