NC State Wins Tough Road Test at Charlotte, 70-63

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The NC State women’s basketball team (3-0) picked up its third straight win on Tuesday night in Charlotte, defeating the 49ers by a final score of 70-63. In a game which featured eight ties and nine lead changes, the Wolfpack held Charlotte to nine points in the final 9:49 to earn the hard-fought victory.
For the third straight game, four Wolfpackers scored in double figures. Miah Spencer led the way with 19, while Carlee Schuhmacher (18 points), Dominique Wilson (12), and Len’Nique Brown-Hoskin (10) also had strong offensive showings.

NC State shot its best percentage of the season on Tuesday, hitting 23-50 shots (46 percent) and 8-20 (40 percent) from distance. State was once again strong from the free throw line, going 16-21 (76.2 percent) from the charity stripe.
Charlotte (1-1) was led by a strong effort from Hillary Sigmon, who scored 27 points on 9-14 shooting from the field.
Spencer got off to an incredible start for the Wolfpack, scoring 12 of the team’s first 14 points to help the Pack out to an early 14-8 lead just 6:15 into the game. Charlotte would battle back, tying the game at 18 points apiece when Sigmon hit a three pointer. She ended the first half with 17 points.
The Pack would promptly follow this up with a 16-6 run over the next 5:31 to take its largest lead of the half (10 points). Schuhmacher and Spencer were instrumental in the opening frame for the Pack, scoring 17 and eight points, respectively. Spencer’s first half was very accurate, as the sophomore captain shot 7-9 from the field and 3-5 from three-point range.
The second half began with a 7-0 run by the hosts to give them a 45-42 lead. Though the Pack tied it up shortly thereafter, Charlotte took its largest lead of the contest (51-47) with 13:37 to play.
With the game tied 54-54 with 9:49 remaining to play, NC State’s defense stepped up in a big way. The Wolfpack would only allow nine points throughout the rest of the contest, with Schuhmacher scoring eight of the Pack’s final 16 points.
NC State will return to action at home on Friday, Nov. 21 vs. High Point. Tip-off between the Wolfpack and Panthers is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Reynolds Coliseum.
