“I think this is a strong class,” said head coach Richard Sykes. “I’m very excited about all three of these guys. Each one is a really good player and I don’t know of any weaknesses they have.”
Justin Hood | Calhoun Academy | St. Matthews, S.C.
Coming to Raleigh by way of Calhoun Academy in St. Matthews, S.C., Justin Hood is an accomplished golfer with two consecutive SCISA Class 2-A golf titles under his belt. Just this past summer, he claimed his first junior golf championship at the Blade Junior Golf Classic after winning a three-way playoff. He then went on to finish fourth in the Carolinas Junior and 12th at the Big I National Championship.
“He’s been a good player for quite a while,” Sykes said. “He has a great short game. When you look at him, he’s a little small in stature, but he is not a short hitter. I think he’s going to be a really good player for us.”
Hood is ranked as the No. 3 player in the state of South Carolina for the class of 2015, is a two-time all-state selection, and a four-time all-region player.
Nolan Mills Jr. | Myers Park HS | Charlotte, N.C.
The son of a former Wolfpack golfer who earned All-American honors and an individual ACC championship in 1983, Nolan Mills Jr. comes to Raleigh by way of Myers Park high school in Charlotte, N.C.
Mills is the recent winner of this summer’s Dogwood State Junior Championship, taking first place at Sapon Ridge Country Club (Lexington, N.C.) with a three-round score of 204 (-9). Just a few weeks prior to that tournament, Mills tied for fourth among the field of 62 at the Carolina Junior Boys’ Championship in Camden, S.C., missing the top spot by just three strokes.
“I’ve been watching him for the last few years and thinking of all the reasons I should not recruit him because of how great his father was,” Sykes said. “He was kind of a late bloomer and I thought to myself ‘are you crazy? This guy can really play!’
“Nolan has worked hard and has an outstanding game. He really proved it late in the summer at the Dogwood State Junior, winning that going away.”
Davis Richards | South Rowan HS | China Grove, N.C.
Davis Richards comes to NC State by way of South Rowan high school in China Grove, N.C.
“Davis is a very fine player, and he’s someone who I expect to make a huge impact,” Sykes said. “He’s a very powerful player. He hits very long and powerful, yet still has a great touch. The first few times I watched him play I knew that he was going to be something very special.”
Davis is the fourth ranked junior in the state of North Carolina for the 2015 class. He just came off a win at Irish Creek Junior shooting 62 -72. He qualified for the sectional qualifying at the U.S. Open and competed in the U.S. Junior.
He is a Carter Cheves Memorial Scholarship Recipient for exhibiting a love for people and a willingness to encourage and serve others. Davis is also one of 14 finalists in the nation for the USGA-AJGA President’s Leadership Award that recognizes junior golfers who demonstrate leadership, character and community service through their involvement with the Leadership Links Program.
The NC State men’s golf team had a strong fall season, posting a 25-17 record and claiming a tournament title at the 2014 Wolfpack Intercollegiate. The team will begin the spring season at the Puerto Rico Classic from Feb. 22-24.
