Pack Opens Strong at USTA/ITA Carolina Regionals

RALEIGH, N.C. – Four representatives of the NC State men’s tennis team advanced to the singles Round of 32 on Thursday, as play opened with two rounds of singles at the 2014 USTA/ITA Carolina Regional Championships.
Overall, the Pack notched 11 victories throughout the day.
Thursday Notes
- Seven of NC State’s eight players competing in the tournament earned a victory in their first round match.
- Simon Norenius defeated Duke’s Josh Levine in the opening round of singles in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1.
- Overall, four of NC State’s six victories came in straight sets, while Ian Dempster won in a decisive third set against Nicolas Osterling of Wake Forest, 6-1, 6-7 (4), 6-2. Thomas Weigel also advanced, as he was leading Daniel Strawn of Clemson, 6-1, 5-3, before Strawn retired from the match.
- Norenius, Nick Horton, Robbie Mudge and Austin Powell each advanced to Friday’s Round of 32 with victories in the second round.
- Three of the victories came in straight sets, while Mudge edged Clemson’s Luke Johnson after dropping the first set, 3-6, 6-4, 6-0.

The Pack will resume play at the USTA/ITA Carolina Regional throughout the day on Friday, as two rounds of doubles and one round of singles will be played at Cary Tennis Park. Play is set to get underway at 9 a.m.
