CARY, N.C. – Robbie Mudge played his way into the singles and doubles round of 16, as the NC State men’s tennis team earned five victories on day two of the 2014 USTA/ITA Carolina Regionals on Friday at Cary Tennis Park.
Singles Notables
- Austin Powell advanced to the singles round of 16 with a three set victory against Kaue Periera of Coastal Carolina in a decisive third set, 5-7, 6-2, 6-2. A native of Muscle Shoals, Ala., Powell will face Duke’s ninth-seeded Nicolas Alvarez on Saturday.
- Mudge also punched his ticket to the round of 16, as he edged Winthrop’s Dylan Comerford, 6-2, 6-7 (9), 6-4. Mudge, the tournament’s 13th-seed, will face South Carolina’s Thiago Pinheiro on Saturday.
Doubles Notables
- The Wolfpack won a total of three doubles matches throughout the day, as the first and second round of doubles were played.
- The ninth-ranked tandem of Ian Dempster and Mudge earned their way to the round of 16 with a thrilling 8-7 (6) victory against Clemson’s pair of Hampton Drake and Christian Harris.
