After a successful season-opening tournament in South Carolina, the 20th-ranked NC State women's golf team will head to Tennessee for the Mason Rudolph Invitational, hosted by Vanderbilt.
The 15-team tournament, held Sept. 20-22 at Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin, Tenn., is loaded with 11 of the nation's top 25 teams. Four of the top five teams in the Golf World/Nike preseason poll are in the field. In addition to No. 20 NC State, Alabama (ranked No. 2), Duke (3rd), UCLA (4th) and Arizona State (5th) will be playing. Host school Vanderbilt is ranked No. 9, and other ranked opponents for NC State this weekend include: North Carolina (15th), Virginia (16th), Texas (19th), Michigan State (21st) and Baylor (24th).
Senior Brittany Marchand, who was named one of the nation's top 50 players to watch in the preseason, led NC State to a fourth-place finish at the season-opening tourney Cougar Classic. Marchand's 54-hole score of 212 was a career best and good for a tie for second place. Her round of 66 on Sept. 8 was her best collegiate round. Marchand was one of three runner-up players just one shot behind tourney champ Anna Young of Florida.
Stabilizing the NC State lineup were juniors Augusta James and Vivian Tsui, who both finished in a tie for 13th. Both James and Tsui posted a round at par and a round two shots under par at the Cougar Classic. Senior Ana Menendez, at 218 (+2) was just one shot behind James and Tsui. She shot a 70 in the second round. Sophomore Rachael Taylor rounded out the lineup at 228 (+12).
The Mason Rudolph Invitational is the second of four fall tournaments for North Carolina State. NCSU will play Oct. 11-13 in Chapel Hill and Oct. 25-27 in Wilmington after this weekend's action.
