INDIAN HARBOUR BEACH, Fla. - Austin Powell earned an Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) point with a win in the first round of the Indian Harbour Futures Tournament Tuesday afternoon.
Powell defeated Daniel Garza of Mexico, seeded third in the tournament, in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1.
"It was a pretty unusual match and I didn't know what to expect," said Powell. "It was my objective to make shots and not give him anything and I was able to contain him throughout the match."
The Muscle Shoals, Ala., native received a wild card to compete in the main draw after playing in a qualifying tournament the previous week. He defeated four opponents in the qualifying draw to earn the wild card.
"The qualifying draw was a tough tournament," Powell added. "I was fortunate to get the wild card and I was able to capitalize on it by getting the win and the ATP point."
Beck Bond and Robbie Mudge also competed in the qualifying tournament, but did not receive a bid to the main draw. Bond and Powell also earned a wild card into the doubles draw, but came up short against their opponents.
