GREENSBORO, N.C. - NC State sophomore Austin Powell has been named the ACC Men's Tennis Player of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday. The Muscle Shoals, Ala., native led the Wolfpack to three victories last week, including an upset win over No. 18 Florida State.
Those three victories extended the Wolfpack's winning streak to five and moved the Pack into first place in the ACC standings with a 5-1 mark. Powell posted a 3-0 record last week at the No. 1 and 2 spots in the lineup and added a victory in doubles play on Sunday, teaming with Beck Bond.
Last Tuesday against Wisconsin, Powell defeated Petr Satral, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, to start the week on a positive note. In the contest against No. 18 Florida State, he earned a comeback win against 122-ranked Dominic Cotrone. Powell's win versus Miami gave the Wolfpack a 3-2 lead, as he topped Diego Soto, 1-6, 6-1, 6-3.
Powell went the entire month of March without a loss, collecting seven victories, and has won his last eight matches, dating back to Feb. 2. He leads the team in wins with 20, dating back to fall play, and is tied for the team lead in dual match wins with Bond at 11.
NC State will return to action Friday, April 5, when it takes the court at home against Virginia Tech at 4 p.m.
