Women's Swimming Sends Seven Performers to NCAA Championships

INDIANAPOLIS - Seven members of the NC State women's swimming team have been selected to compete at the 2013 NCAA Championships, according to an announcement by the NCAA. The Championships will take place Thursday, Mar. 21 - Saturday, Mar. 23 at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis, Ind.
Seniors Allison Hendren and Marifrances Henley, junior Zina Grogg, sophomores Hannah Freyman and Lauren Poli along with freshmen Riki Bonnema and Kristin Connors will represent the Wolfpack. It marks the first NCAA appearance by all seven student-athletes.
State qualified to swim five relay events, including the 200 freestyle relay (1:29.60), 400 freestyle (3:18.59), 800 freestyle (7:11.99), 200 medley (1:38.52) and 400 medley (3:36.45).
At the ACC Championships, the Pack finished first in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:29.60 to break the previous school record and claim the gold medal. Bonnema, Hendren, Henley and Freyman swam the event and received All-ACC honors for winning the title.
Grogg received All-ACC honors in the 100 backstroke after finishing third with a time of 52.98.
In addition to qualifying as members of relay teams, Bonnema, Grogg and Henley also qualified as individuals by meeting the required time standards in their respective events. Bonnema will compete in the 50 freestyle, Grogg will take part in the 100 backstroke and Henley will swim the 100 freestyle.
A total of 281 swimmers were selected to compete in the 2013 NCAA Championships. An additional 41 divers will be chosen to participate in the championships based on their performances at the Zone Diving meets Mar. 11 - 17, for a total of 322 participants.
