RALEIGH, N.C. – Highlighted by redshirt senior Ryan Hill’s victory in the men’s invitational 3,000-meter run at the Husky Classic for the second year in a row, the NC State track & field team concluded competition in Seattle, Wash., the Virginia Tech Elite Meet in Blacksburg Va., and the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark., Saturday afternoon.
Hill, who set the track record in 7:43.08 just one year ago, didn’t need to match or break that mark to win Saturday’s 3K race, as he paced the field with a 7:49.20 time. The Hickory, N.C., native and five-time track All-American won the event by more than one second and picked up his second victory of the season, after he won the men’s invitational 5K at the Hoosier Open on Dec. 7.
In Fayetteville, at the University of Arkansas, senior Kris Kornegay-Gober finished fourth in the men’s invitational high jump with a 7’ 1.50” leap, while junior Elizabeth Shuman took third in the women’s invitational high jump with a 5’ 9.75” hop over the bar.
Senior Karimah Shepherd took fourth place in the women’s invitational triple jump, and tied her personal-best of 42’ 4.25” which she recorded at the Hokie Invitational on Jan. 26. The mark is also the second-longest in school history in the event.
At Virginia Tech, freshman Brian Davis picked up his first-collegiate victory in the men’s 400-meter dash with a time of 48.62, leading a trio of Wolfpack sprinters who placed among the top five finishers in the event. Austin Jackson raced to a fourth-place finish in 49.06 and Daniel Fretz took fifth overall at 49.26. Their respective times also marked personal bests in the event this season.
NC State will return to action next Friday and Saturday, Feb. 15-16, when it competes at the Virginia Tech Challenge and at North Carolina.
