GREENSBORO, N.C. – The NC State men’s golf team turned in a quality performance amid tough conditions on the first day of the 2013 Bridgestone Intercollegiate on Saturday, sitting in fifth place following the first 18 holes of play.
Originally scheduled to include 36 holes, the first day was shortened due to weather conditions in the Greensboro area. The teams played 18 holes Saturday and will play 18 on Sunday.
NC State ended the first day of play with a four-over par score of 292. The Wolfpack is only four strokes behind North Carolina, which ended the day atop the leaderboard. Host UNCG ranks second with a 290 and Chattanooga and Virginia Tech are tied for third place with scores of 291.
“It was a day where you wake up early intending to play 36 holes only to find out that due to weather, you’re not going to play 36, but rather 18,” said head coach Richard Sykes. “Because of that, you have to change your whole thought process.
“Today was a tough day on the course. I think our guys did pretty well today, but it was a tough day out there.”
James Chapman led the way for the Wolfpack on Saturday, carding a one-under par score of 71 to end tied for fourth place. The senior from Gastonia, N.C., recorded four birdies on the afternoon.
Not far behind him was teammate Carter Page, who shot a 73 (+1) through the first round of play to end the day tied for 11th. He was followed by teammates Logan Harrell and Jacob McBride, each of whom shot scores of 74 to end the afternoon tied for 22nd place.
David Cooke wrapped things up for the Wolfpack on the team portion of the tournament Saturday, tying for 69th with a score of 79.
On the individual side of the competition, Stanhope Johnson and Wilson Day represented the Wolfpack. Johnson shot a 76 (+4) to end the day tied for 45th in the field of 80 golfers while Day shot a 78 (+6) to finish Saturday’s round tied for 64th place.
