Vance Heafner was NC State's First Golf All-American

RALEIGH, N.C. - Before Tim Clark, Carl Pettersson, Matt Hill and current All-American Albin Choi, there was Vance Heafner.
Born in Charlotte, Heafner was NC State's first golf All-American and the 1974 ACC champion. He died Wednesday at the age of 58.
Heafner was a three-time All-American before beginning his professional career in 1978.
He won the 1981 Walt Disney World National Team Championship with Mike Holland.
That same year Heafner had his best finish in a major, a tie for 11th in the 1981 PGA Championship at Atlanta Athletic Club. He had five top-10 finishes that season and finished 22nd on the PGA TOUR money list.
He played on the PGA TOUR from 1978-99. He turned 50 in 2004 and planned to play on the Champions Tour, but injuries put an end to his career.
Heafner also spent time as director of golf at Cary's Prestonwood Country Club, host of the annual SAS Championship on the Champions Tour.
