BLACKSBURG, Va. – NC State gave up three second-half goals in dropping an ACC match, 3-0, at No. 9 Virginia Tech on Sunday from Thompson Field.
The Hokies (9-0, 1-0 ACC) Shannon Mayrose broke a scoreless tie in the 56th minute with her fifth goal of the season.
She later connected on a penalty kick seven minutes later for a 2-0 advantage. Nicolette Young scored her first of the year in the 78th minute.
Just before halftime, NC State had two great chances at taking a lead into intermission. Sophomore Shelli Spamer’s free kick from around 30 yards rang off the cross bar.
Minutes later, from a few feet further, Spamer sent another set piece into the goal area that saw red-shirt sophomore forward Jennie Krauser get a head on it, but the Hokie keeper made a diving save to keep the match scoreless at intermission.
NC State (5-5, 0-2 ACC) keeper Victoria Hopkins made 11 saves to keep the Wolfpack close for a majority of the match.
Dayle Colpitts had four saves for the clean sheet, her fourth of the season. Virginia Tech has only allowed two goals all season, and has shutout eight of its nine opponents.
The Wolfpack will play the next five games at home, including Thursday’s final non-league match of the season against Boston University. Game time is set for 7 p.m., at Dail Soccer Field.
