Rising senior Hunter Howell of the NC State men's golf team competed in the South Carolina Open this week, finishing runner-up at the three-day event in Fort Jackson, S.C.
Howell finished at 8-under 205, and that included a final-round back nine of 4-under 31 that got him into a playoff with eventual winner Jerry Haas, the head coach at Wake Forest.
Howell had a birdie putt to win in regulation slip past the hole on 18, and Haas bogeyed the final hole to setup a playoff.
Howell's approach shot hit the green on the first extra hole on the 18th, but left his first putt short and then missed the second, allowing Haas two putts from eight feet to win.
Former State golfers Paul Dickens finished third at 7-under 206.
The 54-hole open took place at the par-71, 6,700-yard Wildcat Course at Fort Jackson Golf Club.
