Pulgar Ends Accomplished Career With Loss at NCAAs

ATHENS, Ga. - NC State senior Jaime Pulgar lost in his opening-round match at the NCAA Men's Tennis Championships to No. 7 Dennis Nevolo of Illinois on Wednesday, 6-1, 6-3.
The straight-set defeat at Georgia's Dan Magill Tennis Center ends the collegiate career of the fiery lefthander from Madrid, Spain, who is one of the most successful players in Wolfpack history.
"His opponent was very good," said Wolfpack head coach Jon Choboy. "And even though Jaime is a veteran, this was his first time in the NCAAs and he might've been a little nervous.
"He settled down in the second set and played well, but [Nevolo] is a guy you have to start well against and finish well against. As always, Jaime competed hard the whole match, to the final point."
The three-time All-ACC selection finished the season with a 20-6 overall record, playing primarily at No. 1 singles and leading the Wolfpack to a 20-10 overall record and to the program's fifth berth in the NCAA Championships.
Pulgar ends his career with an overall singles record of 75-41 and doubles record of 61-38. His singles total is tied for seventh in school history with former All-American Andy Andrews. His doubles total is fourth in school history.
"As soon as the match was over, I told Jaime that we will always appreciate his entire body of work while here at NC State," Choboy said. "He's been a great competitor for four years. This year was particularly good, as he helped the program make the step back to the NCAA Championships where it belongs."
Pulgar, who received his degree in business administration earlier this month during commencement exercises, plans to return to Spain this summer and begin his professional career on the ITA Tour.
