Final Results
Raleigh, N.C. - The NC State men's golf team defending its home turf to win the Wolfpack Spring Open on the par-72, 7,358-yard Lonnie Poole Golf Course on Sunday.
The Wolfpack started the day tied for second with East Carolina and two-shots behind first-round leader Lamar, but erupted for a tournament-topping 5-under 283 final round to capture the victory.
The Wolfpack finished at 1-over 577 for the tournament, while Lamar was second at 5-over 581, and East Carolina came in third at 9-over par.
The Wolfpack started the back nine with a bang. State combined to shoot 6-under on holes 10-12, with seven birdies in that stretch. Three of those came from sophomore All-American Albin Choi.
This was the Wolfpack's first tournament win of the season, and the first for the team since the Wolfpack Intercollegiate tournament in October 2010.
Luke Jerling of Lamar birdied Nos. 15 and 16 to win the individual title over Jay Mulieri of Loyola (Md.) by one stroke. Jerling shot a final-round 4-under 68 to finish at 5-under 139.
NC State junior Mitchell Sutton led the team with a collegiate-best tying 5-under 67 on Sunday to tie for third at 3-under 141, two-shots off the lead. Sutton's score was the best of the 36-hole tournament.
NC State sophomore James Chapman, playing as an individual, began the day tied for the lead, but shot a 4-over 76 on Sunday to tie for 13th at 3-over 147.
NC State seniors Mark McMillen and Graham Baillargeon played very consistent golf over the two days. McMillen shot an even- par final round to finish tied for seventh at 1-over 145. Baillargeon tied for 11th at 2-over 146.
Choi finished tied for 13th at 3-over 147, while senior Chad Day was tied for 21nd with a 5-over 149.
Three other golfers competed as individuals for State. Senior Hunter Howell shot an even-par 72 final round for a 7-over 151fscore for the tournament. Freshman William Herring shot a 1-over par final round for an 8-over 152, while freshman Andrew Decker finished tied for 53rd with an 11-over 155.
The Wolfpack will be back in action at the ACC Championship at the Old North State Club in London, N.C. starting on Friday, April 20, 2012.
