RALEIGH, N.C. - No. 12 Virginia topped the NC State women's tennis team, 5-2, on Saturday at the J.W. Isenhower Tennis Center. The Pack moves to 5-12 (1-5 ACC) while the Cavaliers improve to 13-4 (4-2 ACC).
Despite the loss, NC State came away with two huge wins, as both Joelle Kissell and Christy Sipes defeated ranked opponents.
Kissell, ranked No. 37, came back after dropping the first set to defeat No. 16 Emily Fraser in a 10 point tiebreaker. Fraser won the opening set, 3-6, before Kissell came back and took the second set, 7-5. Kissell then won the tiebreaker, 11-9. Vierra is the highest ranked opponent that Kissell has defeated thus far this season.
Sipes also knocked off a ranked player on Saturday. She picked up a point for the Pack in the No. 6 position, defeating No. 122 Maria Fuccillo, 6-4, 6-2. The win marked the first time this season that Sipes has beat a ranked opponent.
