Pack Tops Hokies, 4-3

RALEIGH, N.C. – NC State defeated No. 63 Virginia Tech, 4-3, at the J.W. Isenhower Tennis Center on Senior Day. The Wolfpack moves to 6-12 (2- 5 ACC), while the Hokies drop to 11-8 (2-3 ACC).
Senior Ashley Miller was honored at the match, as it was the final home competition of the season for the Wolfpack women. Miller won both matches that she competed in on Sunday.
During her time at NC State, Miller compiled career winning records in both singles and doubles play in the fall. Miller owns a record of 20-15 in singles, and 19-17 in doubles in fall action.
After not participating in any singles matches last spring, Miller has already tallied five wins in the 2012 season. She owns a career record of 22-19 in doubles action in the spring. Many of those wins, including a victory on Sunday, have come with current doubles partner Joelle Kissell.
Virginia Tech started off the competition by winning two doubles matches to claim the point. Emily Lauten and Isel Martinez-Marcos started things off, topping Christy Sipes and Chloe Smith, 8-4, in the No. 3 spot. Miller and Kissell tied things up, defeating Martha Blakely and Carol Kahoun, 9-7.
Shannon Betts and Courtney Rauscher broke the tie, defeating Tatiana Illova and Nicole Martinez in a tiebreaker, 9-8 (7-2).
The Hokies won the first match singles to take a 2-0 lead, when Kahoun topped Sipes on court No. 5. The Pack battled back after that, with No. 37 Kissell defeating Blakely, 6-3, 6-3 in the No. 1 spot. Illova, Miller and Martinez each picked up a win to give NC State a 4-3 victory.
