RALEIGH, N.C. – Not only was the sub-four-minute time Ryan Hill turned in last weekend at the Virginia Tech Elite indoor track and field meet the fastest recorded mile in NC State history, the junior from Hickory had three other Wolfpack runners following closely behind for four of the 20 fastest indoor miles ever posted by Wolfpack runners.
Senior Bobby Moldovan, junior Brian Himelright and redshirt freshman Matt Sonnenfeldt all completed the indoor mile under 4:10. They were among a total of 11 NC State uniformed runners and two unattached runners with Wolfpack ties participating in the race.
Hill’s mark broke Jim Wilkins’ long-standing school record for the one-mile run. However, Wilkins posted his time at Derr Track, while running in one of the fastest collegiate miles in history. Wilkins finished fourth behind winner Tony Waldrop and Reggie McAfee, both of North Carolina, and Steve Wheeler of Duke. Waldrop and McAfee finished under four minutes, and Waldrop went on to run a remarkable 11 consecutive mile races under four minutes, including setting the world indoor record that stood from 1974-2009.
Hill, meanwhile, has run the two fastest indoor miles in school history. Last season at the same Virginia Tech Elite meet, his time of 4:02.33 broke the school record for the indoor mile set by Anthony Riley of 4:02.44 at the 1993 ACC Indoor Championships.
This weekend, as the Wolfpack men’s and women’s track teams travel as split squads to four different meets, Hill will attempt to break his ACC- and school-record in the indoor 3,000 meters at the FloTrack Husky Classic in Seattle. Hill finished third in last year’s event, posting a time of 7:50.38, smashing the previous conference and school marks.
Both Hill and Moldovan are among the 102 entries in the 3,000-meter race at the Dempsey Indoor Center in Seattle.
Another contingent of mostly mid-distance and distance runners will participate in Valentine Invitational at the Boston University Track and Tennis Center in Boston. Leading the way in the two-day event will be Himelright and 2011 NCAA Outdoor All-American Kenyetta Iyevbele and two-time women’s cross-country All-American Laura Hoer.
Another group of primarily jumpers and throwers will head to Fayetteville, Ark., on Friday for the Tyson Invitational at the Randal Tyson Track Center. Freshman Rueben Malone has been impressive this season in the triple jump and long jump, twice going more than 50 feet in the triple and setting a personal-best 23-feet, 7 ½-inches in the long.
Three-time All-ACC performer Kris Kornegay-Gober will compete in the high jump for the men, while Karimah Shepherd, who has won two the triple jump at two meets this season, will compete for the women. Senior school-recorder holder and multiple ACC-champion Lawanda Henry will compete in the 20-pount weight throw and the shot put, along with teammates Tremanisha Taylor and Kortney Pearce.
On Saturday, a final group of sprinters and distance runners will head to Winston-Salem, N.C., to compete in the JDL Fast Track Collegiate Invitational, at the newly opened JDL Fast Track indoor facility.
Recaps and full results for each meet will be posted on GoPack.com at the end of each day.
