NC State Softball Announces 2013 Schedule

2013 NC State Softball Schedule

RALEIGH, N.C. - Facing 12 opponents that made the NCAA Division I Championships, NC State softball and first-year head coach Shawn Rychcik will face a challenging schedule in 2013.

The Wolfpack, which finished 23-31 overall and 5-16 in the ACC in 2012, will participate in five early-season tournaments, including the Wolfpack Challenge March 1-3.

"It's a lot of quality competition," said Rychcik, who took over the program in July after eight years at Boston University. "Overall, it's a pretty challenging schedule that will prepare us to compete in the ACC.

Rychcik and his squad of 14 players will open the season on Feb. 8 in the Florida International Panther Invitational in Miami, a three-day tournament that also includes Georgetown and Kansas.

The following weekend, the Wolfpack travels to Tampa, Fla., for a four-team tournament hosted by South Florida that includes a trio of tournament teams: the host school, Tennessee and Coastal Carolina.

The next weekend, Feb. 22-24, the Pack will participate in a tournament hosted by Kennesaw State in Woodstock, Ga. Also participating are Northern Colorado, Jacksonville State, Youngstown State and Bowling Green.

State's own Wolfpack Challenge will be held at the Curtis and Jacqueline Dail Softball Stadium March 1-3, featuring Stony Brook, Kansas, North Carolina A&T and Lafayette.

The Pack opens ACC play with a doubleheader against Florida State on March 9, followed by a single game the next day.

Rychcik and his team will then compete in its final tournament, a transcontinental trip to Fullerton, Calif., for the always-loaded Judy Garmin Classic. NCAA teams DePaul, Oklahoma, Michigan and Texas will join NC State and Pacific in the three-day event.

"If we are going to get to where we want to be in the conference, these are the kinds of teams we need to play and be successful against," Rychcik said. "It starts right now, from the beginning, right off the bat.

"No need to wait for it."

In all, the Pack has 50 scheduled regular-season contests, plus the ACC Championship, which will be held May 10-12 in Tallahassee, Fla. The season will culminate with three weekends of NCAA Championship play, ending with the College World Series in its traditional home of Oklahoma City, Okla.

Rychcik and his team have been conducting fall workouts for a little over a month, including a doubleheader sweep of Longwood on Sept. 23. State won the first game, 5-0, behind the shutout pitching of sophomore Emily Weiman and the second, 8-2, thanks to a pair of home runs by junior first baseman Leah Jones.

The Pack will participate in the Ray Chandler Memorial Tournament at the Walnut Creek Softball Complex in Raleigh next weekend, playing five games in the 10-team tournament.

After a break for exams and the holidays, the team will begin practice for the spring on Jan. 7.

The Wolfpack returns senior outfielder Bethaney Wells, who had 11 homers and was fourth in the ACC with a .567 slugging percentage last season, and 2012 ACC Freshman of the Year Renada Davis, a shortstop who set school records for batting average and on-base percentage in her inaugural collegiate campaign.

"It's been a good start, getting to know all the players and putting some new things in," Rychcik said. "I saw a lot of things that I really liked, though it's hard to tell overall because we've only played two games so far.

"It takes some time to get things going just the way you want it."
