Men's Tennis Takes 6-1 Win Over Penn State

RALEIGH, N.C. – The No. 59 NC State men’s tennis team won its third consecutive match of the 2012 spring season on Sunday morning, defeating visiting Penn State at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center by a score of 6-1.
The Wolfpack (3-0) won the doubles point thanks to a 9-7 win by senior Jaime Pulgar and freshman Austin Powell in the No. 3 doubles match. Senior Dominic Hodgson and redshirt sophomore Matt Thomson also won in doubles play.
Pulgar, Hodgson, freshman Austin Powell and Mudge all won in succession in the first round of singles play to secure the match for the Wolfpack. In the final match, junior Rafael Paez bounced back to take an 0-6, 7-5, 6-4 win, as the Pack improved its all-time record against the Nittany Lions to 10-0.
“We definitely have guys doing what we want them to do, but we have to be more consistent throughout all our matches,” said head coach Jon Choboy. “We can’t play a game a certainly way, then let our foot off the pedal.
“Overall, I like the energy we are showing right now as we continue to look at all our positions. The good thing is that we have a lot of options.”
It was the first of two matches for the Wolfpack on Sunday. State will also host East Carolina in a 4 p.m. match at the Isenhour Tennis Center.
Next weekend, the Pack travels to Lexington, Ky., next weekend to participate in the ITA Kickoff with host Kentucky, Tulsa and East Tennessee State. The Wolfpack will face the Wildcats at noon on Friday, followed by a match between Tulsa and ETSU at 3 p.m.
The two losers will face each other the next day at 10 a.m. in the consolation match and the two winners will meet at 1 p.m. in the championship match.
