DURHAM, N.C. -- NC State got a stout performance from its back-end defenders, but David Opoku's goal at the 15:52 mark lifted eighth-ranked and unbeaten Cal-Santa Barbara to a 1-0 victory over the Wolfpack on the final day of the Duke/Nike Classic.
The defeat was the first at NC State for head coach Kelly Findley, whose squad limited a dangerous Gauchos offense to 17 shots and just four shots on goal before falling to 2-1-1 for the season. The Pack is 1-1 this season vs. ranked opponents. NC State shut down No. 9 SMU 1-0 on Saturday.
State got six shots, including its lone shot on goal, from forward Nazmi Albadawi.
The goal by Opoku, the 2010 Big West freshman of the year, was the first allowed by the Wolfpack this season, snapping goaltender Fabian Otte's season-opening shutout streak at 493 minutes. NC State had opened the season with three consecutive shutouts for the first time since 1987.
NC State returns to action on Saturday, September 10 at home vs. Richmond. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
