The NC State men's tennis team opened up its second tournament of the fall with several wins from its young lineup in two different nationally prominent tournaments.
In Athens, Ga., at the 44th-annual Southern Intercollegiate, newcomers Austin Powell, Robbie Mudge and Beck Bond all won their first matches at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
Playing in Division II, Powell defeated Kentucky's Panav Jha, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (6), while Mudge topped Samford's Fernando Costa, 6-2, 6-3.
Sophomore Sean Weber also won his opening match in Division II, taking a 7-5, 0-6, 6-2, decision over The Citadel's Dillon Berkabile.
Junior Matt Thomson lost the opening set in his Division I match against Stetson's Njal Stene, but came back to win the match 1-6, 6-2, 6-4. Also in Division I, sophomore Ivan Sanchez Gomez fell to Georgia Tech's Juan Spir, 6-2, 6-2.
Playing in Division III, Bond drew a first-round bye then won his second-round match over Rich Meade of Winthrop in three sets, 6-1, 1-6, 6-3. Junior Will Rollison lost his Division III opener against Calum Gee of Davidson, 6-1, 6-2.
In doubles action, Thomson and Weber won their opening round match in Division I against Virginia Tech's Lucas Oliviera and Trpimis Kujundzic, 8-6, then fell in its second match to the second-seeded duo of Sadio Doumbia and Ignacio Taboada. They will continue in the consolation bracket.
Mudge and Powell fell 8-6 to Kentucky's Tom Jomby and Anthony Rossi in another Division I doubles match.
Rollison was paired in a blind draw with Virginia Tech's Mauricio Antun for a Division II match, and they won their opening match 9-7 over Georgia's Will Oliver and Will Reynolds.
Bond and Gomez were scheduled to play their first doubles match Saturday at 7:45 a.m.
Play will continue Saturday and Sunday in championship and consolation brackets in all three singles and two doubles divisions. Finals in all brackets will be played Monday.
In Charlottesville, Va., senior Dominic Hodgsonwon his first match at the UVa Ranked +1 Invitational, on a day when foul weather forced all matches inside to the Boar's Head Sports Club.
Hodgson, ranked No. 105 nationally, topped Virginia's Brian Fong, 6-1, 6-4.
Teammate Julian Sullivan, also a senior, lost his opening match to Virginia's Steven Rooda, 6-3, 6-3.
In doubles play, Hodgson and Sullivan fell 8-5 to Virginia Tech's Luka Somen and Corrado Tocci.
