RALEIGH, N.C. – NC State’s University Dining and various campus organizations are hosting a tailgate event for Thursday night’s football game between the Wolfpack and Cincinnati.
In addition to a live broadcast of the game on Harris Fields and other activities on Hillsborough Street, students are invited to take part in a “Penny Wars” competition that will benefit the NC State football team’s chapter of Uplifting Athletes.
The tailgate event, called the "Bearcat Beatdown," will host a competition between the residence halls on campus. Each residence hall will battle to collect the most pennies, while sabotaging its competition by inserting silver coins or dollar bills into another residence halls’ jar.
At the end of the tailgate event, the residence hall that has the most points will win $300 in catering from Moe’s® Southwest Grill.
All of the funds collected will be tallied and given to the NC State chapter of Uplifting Athletes. Uplifting Athletes is a national organization that works with college football players to fund rare disease research.
The NC State football team chose leukemia as the rare disease that they will raise money for in support of offensive coordinator Dana Bible, who was diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukemia, a rare cancer of the blood, in November 2009. Bible has been in remission for the past 14 months.
NC State football center Wayne Crawford, quarterback Mike Glennon, wide receiver T.J. Graham and others began the team’s chapter of Uplifting Athletes to help raise funds and awareness for leukemia research.
To educate students on the organization at the campus tailgate event, Crawford recorded a short video describing the NC State chapter. Click here to view the video.
