PITTSBURGH, Pa. – NC State women’s soccer suffered its first setback of the season with a 3-1 loss to Penn State Friday in the first game of the Pitt Soccer Classic.
Senior forward Tanya Cain gave the Wolfpack a 1-0 lead midway through the first half with her third goal of the season. Freshman Stephanie Bronson earned the assist on the play when she played a through ball that Cain deposited into the back of the net at 22:18.
The lead held for a majority of the opening half until Maya Hayes struck for the equalizer in the 40th minute for Penn State, who is ranked No. 22 in the soccertimes.com poll this week.
The game remained tied 1-all at intermission.
Penn State (4-1) scored just over five minutes into the second half when Hayes struck again for what turned out to be the game winner at the 50:33 mark.
Taylor Schram added a third goal in the 69th minute for the Nittany Lions.
Cain and freshman Cheyenne Spade led the Wolfpack attack with three shots apiece.
Penn State held a slim 13-11 shot advantage, and a 3-1 lead in corner kicks.
