College Park, Md. - The NC State men's soccer team opened ACC play with a 3-1 loss at No. 1 Maryland Friday night. After 44 minutes of scoreless soccer to open the game, the Terps (7-0) scored just 12 seconds before the half, and added two more goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half for the win.
"We are disappointed with the result because we worked so hard in that first half," said head coach Kelly Findley. "We had a great game plan that the players stuck to with great discipline, until right before the half which cost us a goal. I was pleased with the effort in second half, and we finished strong. I know we all learned a lesson of how those small moments can lead to giving up a goal."
Maryland struck first right before halftime. After a foul was called on NC State at midfield, the Terps played a long ball into the box and Mikias Eticha cleaned up the scramble and netted the goal just 12 seconds before the half ended.
NC State had two good looks at goal in the final 10 minutes of the first half, as both Danny DiPrima and Nazmi Albadawi had point-blank shots, but Maryland keeper Will Swaim made the save on both attempts.
Maryland would add a pair of tallies early in the second half. Just under three minutes into the second half. Casey Townsend's shot was saved by Pack
keeper Fabian Otte, but Jereme Raley one-timed the rebound into the back of the Pack's net at the 47:25 mark. Just under 10 minutes into the half, Sunny Jane stole a pass deep in Pack territory and found John Stertzer alone in the box at the 54:58 mark.
The Pack would get on the scoreboard in the final minute of play. Senior Watt Williams won the ball in the midfield, and found Moritz Steidten in the center of the field. Steidten sent a through ball to freshman Monbo Bokar who scored his first collegiate goal.
The Pack will begin a four-game homestand at Dail Soccer Field, starting with Presbyterian on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
