Raleigh, N.C. - NC State recently hosted Dr. Linda C. Hancock, FNP, PhD, who is the Director of the Wellness Resource Center ("The Well") at VCU. Dr. Hancock spoke to NC State's student-athletes about the dangers of alcohol.
The title of the program was "Alcohol Puzzles that Monkey with your Mind". The program used audience response devices that allowed for immediate anonymous response to show athletes that they are healthier than they think.
"I think Dr. Hancock did an excellent job," said Erika Alpeter of the NC State women's cross country team. "She was quick, blunt, to the point, and all the way educational and entertaining. I enjoyed the real-life examples, and I LOVED the clickers.
"It gets people involved and I love seeing the data to see for ourselves the stats that she/others are spewing at us."
The goal was to provide some basic alcohol and sex education. The student-athletes answered the question "What's the most devastating drug?" Hopefully the answer made everybody more compassionate to people who have problems with "molecules" and have encouraged athletes to speak up if they are worried about themselves or a teammate.
