EUGENE, Ore. - NC State freshman Tremanisha Taylor of Henderson, N.C., narrowly missed a chance to qualify in the Pan-American Junior Athletics Championships with her performance in the junior women's discus on Thursday at the USA Outdoor National Championships at Oregon's Hayward Field.
Taylor, who redshirted the regular season but is now competing in her first official meet for the Wolfpack, finished fourth overall with a throw of 157-feet, 4-inches, just two inches behind second-place finisher Jessica Sharbono of Colorado State and one inch behind Jessica Moroszek of Kansas. The top two finishers in each event earn a spot on the USA Pan-Am junior team.
Taylor competed in several meets this season as an unattached participant, taking first place in three meets.
Former Wolfpack runners Kristina Vegh and Bobby Mack both participated in the late-night 10,000-meter run. Mack was ninth in his race, with a time of 28:51.99. Roth finished 24th in her race with a time of 34:05.64Several current Wolfpack athletes will be running during Friday's busy day of competition. Freshman Kenyetta Iyevbele, who won first-team All-America honors 12 days ago at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, will run in the preliminaries of the women's junior 800-meter race, which is slated to begin at 5:35 p.m. (EST).
Sophomore Ryan Hill of Hickory, N.C., an honorable-mention All-America at the NCAA meet, is slated to run in the men's senior 5,000-meter race, which begins at 10:40 p.m. He could be joined by redshirt-freshman Andrew Colley of Williamsburg, Va., who earned a provisional time earlier this season and may be added to Friday night's field.
Former Wolfpack runner and current volunteer coach Stephen Furst will also run in the senior men's 5,000 meters.
Freshman Matt Schick of Raleigh will compete in the men's junior 1,500-meter preliminary on Friday morning.
Also competing Friday is former Wolfpack All-America cross country and track standout Julia Lucas, who is running in the senior women's 5,000-meter race.
Freshman Jule Rich of Cumberland, Va., will compete in the junior men's discus on Saturday morning, while freshman Bryan Spreitzer of Apex, N.C., will compete in the men's junior 5,000-meter race on Saturday evening.
