GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Atlantic Coast Conference league office announced today that seniors Alicia Abbott and Bridget Desbois have been named to the 2011 All-ACC Academic softball team. The honor is the second for Desbois, but marks the first time in Abbott's two-year career at NC State she has been placed on the academic softball team.
To be eligible for the All-ACC academic softball team, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during her academic career.
This season, Desbois led the Wolfpack in most offensive categories, including batting average (.327), hits (48), doubles (7) and triples (2). She also had an impressive year defensively at third base, racking up 76 assists but only 10 errors while starting every game for the Pack. At the conclusion of her final year in the Red and White, Desbois was named to the Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division I All-Region second team.
Abbott, too, had a solid senior campaign for the Pack in 2011. She knocked five doubles, four home runs, and 14 RBI offensively, and was ranked as the 56th toughest player in the nation to strike out, fanning only seven times all season. While starting all 49 games at first base, Abbott posted a stellar .990 fielding percentage, committing only three errors while accruing 276 putouts.
Desbois graduated in May with a degree in Biological Sciences, and Abbott is slated to earn her degree in Communication this December.
