STILLWATER, Okla. – 20th-seeded and 24th-ranked NC State finished 27th at the 2011 NCAA Men’s Golf Championship at the par-72, 7,416-yard Karsten Creek layout.
In its 16th appearance in the championship, the Wolfpack moved up one spot in the field from yesterday among a field of 30 institutions. The top eight teams advance to a three-day match play tournament to determine the national champion.
NC State finished the 54-hole championship with a final team score of 58-over 922 after rounds of 22-over 310, 20-over 308 and 16-over 304 during Thursday's final trek around the course.
NCAA Southeast Region co-champ Mitchell Sutton showed his best form of the event today with a 1-under 71. He eagled the par 5 18th and birdied the next two holes to move to 3-under on his day. Two late bogeys set him back a couple strokes to finish up tied for 38th.
ACC Freshman of the Year Albin Choi tied for 88th after a 5-over 77 on Thursday. He recorded a team-high four birdies today, but four double bogeys slowed his progress.
Senior Brandon Detweiler shot a 4-over 76 in his final tournament with the Wolfpack, and tied for 102nd. He shot 2-over on both sides today and had a pair of birdies at 12 and 14.
Junior Chad Day shot 8-over 80 for the third-straight day to tie for 132nd. The Raleigh native tied Choi for the team lead with eight birdies over the length of the tournament, including three on Thursday.
Junior Graham Baillargeon shot a final round 11-over 83 to finish tied for 146th.
UCLA finished first on the team leader board at 8-over 872, followed by Georgia Tech (875), Oklahoma State and Illinois at 879 and Georgia (884).
Ohio State, Augusta State and Duke round out the eight teams that advance to match play.
On the strength of yesterday’s competitive course-record 65, John Peterson of LSU shot even-par 72 to earn the individual national championship by one shot over UCLA’s Patrick Cantlay.
