RALEIGH, N.C. -- Select athletes from the NC State men's and women's track teams will participate in a pair of local all-day meets this weekend, beginning Saturday at UNC's Dick Taylor Tar Heel Relays at the Belk Track at Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill and concluding Sunday at the Duke Twilight Meet at Wallace Wade Stadium in Durham.
Field events for Saturday's meet begin at 2 p.m. and will continue through the evening. Running events begin at 6 p.m., with the final event slated to begin at 9:05 p.m. Sunday's field events begin at 2 p.m., with the running events going through 9 p.m.
Among the Wolfpack men who will compete are sophomore Kris Kornegay-Gober, senior Lamont Savage and junior Emmanuel Davis in the long jump and freshman Christian Council in the high jump. For the Wolfpack women, Karimah Shepherd and Jazueline Daniels will compete in the long jump and triple jump, respectively.
Head coach Rollie Geiger will rest his distance runners, who are coming off a strong performance in at the Payton Jordan Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif., last weekend, but he will send a strong group of sprinters, many of whom will compete in both meets.
Both sophomore T.J. Graham and junior Tobias Palmer, a pair of football players still transitioning to track, will compete in the 100-meter dash, along with fifth-year senior A'Tolani Akinkuotu. They will all compete together, along with sophomore Ben Major, on Saturday and Sunday in the 4 X 100-meter relay, in hopes of lowering last weekend's season-best time of 40.47 seconds at the Penn Relays.
The women will have five entries (junior Tiayonna Blackmon, junior Amira Chowyuk, freshman Kenyetta Iyevbele, junior Brittany View and junior Marika Walker) in the 800-meter run and four (Erika Alpeter, redshirt freshman Ryanna Henderson, freshman Halsey Merritt and sophomore Leah Vaughn) in the 1,500-meter run on Sunday at Duke.
There are no live results available from the UNC meet, but final results will be posted late Saturday night on GoPack.com. Live results from Sunday's meet at Duke are available here.
The Wolfpack will use these two meets, plus next weekend's two-day Carolina Qualifier meet in Chapel Hill to record qualifying times for the upcoming NCAA Regional May 26-28 in Bloomington, Ind. The top 48 times in both the east region and the west region will advance to the NCAA Regional.
