Second Round Results
OCALA, Fla. - Mitchell Sutton fired a 5-under 67 to take a 1-stroke lead individually and move No. 24 NC State into a tie for second after Friday's second round of the NCAA Florida Regional at Golden Ocala Golf Course.
The fifth-seeded Wolfpack shot a second-round team score of 3-under 285 and is at 7-under 569 through 36 holes at the par 72 track that covers 6,994 yards.
The top five teams in the region advance to the NCAA Championship that begins May 31 in Stillwater, Okla.
Sutton, an All-ACC selection in his second season at NC State, topped yesterday's brilliant 4-under 68 by one shot on Friday. The London, Ontario, native chalked up six birdies on his first 12 holes today, and a bogey at the par 3 15th was his only blemish on the scorecard.
ACC Freshman of the Year Albin Choi played a second-straight day of steady golf with an even-par 72 on Friday, and is in 24th place at 1-under 143 with 18 holes to play. He fired three birdies and had three bogeys during his second round.
Junior Chad Day had four birdies on the back nine that led to a 1-under 71 finish today and finds himself tied for 25th through 36 holes at even-par 144.
Two blemishes on the front nine had him going out in 38, but the Raleigh native got it going with a birdie at No. 11, and continued with another at 14 and then had a birdie-birdie finish at Nos. 17 and 18 to post the second-lowest round of the day for the Wolfpack.
Senior Brandon Detweiler started with a birdie, and ended with a birdie. In between he recorded two other birdies, four bogeys and a triple at the ninth that left him at 3-over 75 on Friday, and +3 (145) for the championship - tied for 40th.
Junior Graham Baillargeon bounced back from a disappointing opening round with a 3-over 75, four shots better than yesterday, and is in 66th place at 10-over 154 for the tournament.
He went out in 3-over 39, but rallied with an eagle at the par-5 12th that led him to shoot even on the back nine.
NC State held the lead briefly in mid-morning at -6 after Choi's birdie at the fifth, but the jumbled leader board was in constant flux all day long. Six different teams led at one point, before defending national-champion Augusta State (-11, 565) made its move with a 13-under 275 that gives them a four-stroke cushion over the Wolfpack and Florida heading into Saturday's final round.
Arkansas and Baylor are tied for fourth at 6-under 570, one shot behind the Pack. Kennesaw State and Georgia Southern are tied for sixth at 5-under 571 as six teams are separated by just two shots.
Sutton leads by one stroke over Philipp Westermann (-8, 136) of Southeastern Louisiana, and two shots over Notre Dame's Niall Platt (-7, 137).
The third and final round gets underway Saturday with the first tee time at 7:30 a.m. NC State will tee off with Augusta State and Florida from 8:40-9:20 a.m.
