Sophomore Ryan Hill came within a few fractions of a second of breaking his own school record in the 1,500-meter run Saturday night at the Kent Taylor-Texas Roadhouse Carolina Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C.
His time of 3:40.80 is the seventh fastest time recorded in that event this year by a college runner and was just off the school mark of 3:40.22 he set last year as a freshman.
Hill, a native of Hickory, N.C., is a three-time All-American in track and cross country who also owns three school records in indoor and outdoor track. Earlier this year during an indoor race in Seattle, Hill set the school record in the 3,000-meter race. Two weeks ago at the Payton Jordan Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif., he broke the school record he set last year as a freshman in the 5,000 meters.
It was a fast race for the Wolfpack, which entered 10 current, former and unattached runners in the 1,500 meters. Redshirt freshman Andrew Colley of Williamsburg, Va., was fifth in the race, with a time of 3:45.24, while junior Gregory Dame of Winston-Salem, N.C., was ninth at 3:46.46.
The Wolfpack women also entered a large contingent in the 1,500-meter race. Sophomore Erin Mercer of Peninsula, Ohio, led the way with a mark of 4:24.89, finishing eighth in the race. Freshman Kenyetta Iyevbele of Charlotte was ninth at 4:25.89.
In the 800-meter race, sophomore Amira Chowyuk of Virginia Beach, Va., was eighth with a time of 2:16.55.
Earlier in the day, several of NC State’s jumpers also had the best performances of their careers while competing in the second day of action at the Clemson (S.C.) Final Qualifier.
Sophomore Kris Kornegay-Gober of Washington, D.C., won the high jump at Clemson’s Rock Norman Track. The three-time All-ACC performer in indoor and outdoor track hit a personal-best mark of 6-feet, 11 ¾-inches to beat the seven other jumpers in the field.
Wolfpack women Danielle Adams, a sophomore from Jacksonville, N.C., and Lacey Shuman, a freshman from Timonium, Md., both hit season-best marks as well in the high jump. Adams was third with her mark of 5-feet, 7 ¼ inches, while Shuman was fourth at 5-feet, 5 ¼-inches.
In the triple jump, both junior Kwame Boatwright of Durham, N.C., and Travis Weston of Fayetteville, N.C., hit personal-best marks on the day. Boatwright was fourth in the event with his leap of 50-feet, ½-inches, while Weston was fifth at 49-feet, 10 ½-inches.
Sophomore Jazueline Daniels of Kernersville, N.C., matched her best jump of the season at 40-feet, 3 ¼-inches.
In running events, senior A’Tolani Akinkuotu of Greenville, N.C., finished fifth in the 100-meter finals with a time of 10.73 seconds. Junior James Robinson of Raleigh was seventh in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 54.30 seconds.
Select members of both the men’s and women’s teams will participate Sunday in the NC A&T’s Aggie Classic in Greensboro. Complete results will be available on GoPack.com.
