NEW LONDON, N.C. – No. 25 NC State is tied for seventh after the second round of the ACC Men’s Golf Championship at Old North State Club.
The Wolfpack fired a team score of 1-under 287 Saturday and stands at 6-over 582 for the championship after 36 holes.
Freshman Albin Choi remains in the top 10 after a 1-over 73 on Saturday. He made the turn 2-under and was within an arm’s length of the lead at 4-under for the tournament, but four bogeys wrapped around one back-nine birdie stalled out his early momentum.
The Toronto, Canada, native is tied for eighth at 1-under 143 with 18 holes to play in his first ACC Championship.
Sophomore Mitchell Sutton shot a 1-under 71 today and is tied for 18th. He had it rolling early with birdies at the first two holes, but ran into a bit of trouble with three bogeys over the next five holes. However, a birdie at No. 9 left him even at the turn.
A single birdie at No. 16 highlighted a steady back nine that puts him at even-par 144 for the championship.
Senior Brandon Detweiler shot the Wolfpack’s best round of the first two days with a 3-over 69 that boomeranged him 18 places up the leader board and is now tied for 31st at 4-over 148.
Determined to bounce back from yesterday’s 7-over 79, Detweiler played the front nine 1-under, but that was just the beginning. He did some serious work over the next four holes, recording birdies at Nos. 10, 11 and 13 to move to 4-under for the day. A bogey at 17 was his only blemish on the scorecard as he chalked up his best score of the spring.
Junior Chad Day had a difficult time navigating the back nine today, ending up with a 41. That followed a relaxed first nine holes that saw one birdie, one bogey and seven-consecutive pars.
His 5-over 77 on Saturday puts the native of Raleigh, N.C., tied for 40th at 7-over 151 through 36 holes.
Junior Mark McMillen littered his second-round scorecard with red circles and blue squares. In fact he only made par on three of his first 14 holes, alternating birdies and bogeys for seven-straight holes on the front nine. Sandwiched between pars at Nos. 1 and 9, the Smithfield, N.C., native was 1-under at the turn after four birdies and three bogeys.
The back nine was a bit more pedestrian with a birdie at 10, followed by a pair of bogeys and a double bogey to finish up at 2-over 74 and is tied for 44th at 8-over 152.
Sixth-ranked Georgia Tech leads the field at 17-under 559, nine shots ahead of No. 16 Duke. Clemson is four shots in back of the Blue Devils for third.
Georgia Tech’s Paul Haley posted a second-straight 4-under 68 to lead a field of 55 competitors. He owns a three-shot lead over three others.
The third and final round begins Sunday at 8 a.m. Admission is free, while live stats are available at golfstat.com. NC State will tee off from 8:40-9:20 a.m., alongside North Carolina and Virginia Tech for the second-straight day.
