BLACKSBURG, Va. - NC State (23-20, 4-10 ACC) softball defeated Virginia Tech (32-15, 8-8 ACC) in the first game of the three-game ACC series tonight at Tech Softball Park in Blacksburg, Va. by a score of 3-0.
Caitlin Dent paced the Wolfpack offensively, going 2-for-3 with two doubles in the game.
Kayla Cox picked up the shutout win for NC State, her third of the season, giving up only four hits while striking out nine Hokie batters in the victory.
Chelsea Tate led off the second inning with a double, but Virginia Tech starting pitcher Jasmin Harrell retired the next three Wolfpack batters to end the frame. After three innings of play, the game remained scoreless.
The Hokies threatened to strike in the bottom of the fourth inning when Kristina Cruz and Stephanie Kujawa notched back-to-back base hits. Cruz, though, was thrown out trying to take third by Wolfpack right fielder Dent, her second outfield assist of the season, to preserve the 0-0 score.
Dent opened the fifth inning with a double and moved to third on a deep fly ball by Tate. The next two batters, however, were unable to push the run across, and the score remained 0-0.
Landon Warren finally put the Pack on the board in the top of the sixth inning by blasting her third homerun of the 2011 campaign, a solo shot. Dent then roped her second double of the day to plate Kirstin Morris, pinch running for Bridget Desbois, and Bethaney Wells, who reached on a single. After six frames, the Pack held a 3-0 advantage over the Hokies.
The Pack continues its play against Virginia Tech tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m.
