CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - NC State sophomore Ryan Hill had a successful debut to the 2011 outdoor track and field season, winning the 1,500-meter race at the Kent Taylor-Joe Hilton Carolina Invitational Saturday evening against a deep field of distance runners.
Hill edged NC State volunteer assistant coach Stephen Furst, who was running in the race unattached, with a time of 3:44.32 at the Belk Track at Fetzer Field. Hill was one of a handful of Wolfpack athletes to win events at the day-long meet, which had its schedule altered and some field events moved inside because of inclement weather.
In the final event of the evening, Hill led a long list of runners associated with the Wolfpack, including post-graduates Furst and Bobby Mack, who helped the Pack put five runners in the top eight of the event. Redshirt freshman Andrew Colley was fifth in the race at 3:46.50 and Andy Henken was eighth at 3:46.80.
Throwers excelled for the Wolfpack women's team, as junior Brittany Hampton won handily in the discus for her third victory of the season. She had her best toss this year at 170-feet, 4-inches. Junior Lawanda Henry was second in the hammer throw at 169-feet, 5-inches, and freshman Tremanisha Taylor, competing unattached, won the shot put at 42-feet, 2 1/4-inches and was second to Hampton in the discus at 156-feet, 1-inch.
Sophomore Benjamin Major III won the 100-meter dash at 10.77 seconds against a small field that included just five runners. Senior A'Tolani Akinkuotu was second at 10.89 seconds, while Phillip Hardy was fourth at 11.21 seconds. All three ran Friday at the Friendship and Freedom Games in Greensboro.
Junior Miles Walker had a personal best 47.87 seconds in the 400-meter dash, followed by freshman Dorian Crawford in fifth with a time of 50.28 seconds.
In the discus throw, freshman Jule Rich won the event with a throw of 170-feet, 3-inches, competing as an unattached entry. Freshman Nathaniel Williams was second at 158-feet, 3-inches.
The Wolfpack fielded two of the three entries in the 4X100 meter dash, with the A team winning in a season-best time of 41.01 seconds.
Other women who performed well include Paige Eley, who was third in the 100 meters; junior Tiayonna Blackmon, who was third in the 800 meters; freshman Lillian Greibesland, who was fourth in the 1,500 meters; and freshman Halsey Merritt, who was third in the 3,000 meters.
Both the men's and women's team will travel to Durham next weekend for the ACC Championships at Duke's Wallace Wade Stadium.
