
Pack Sweeps Singles to Top Winthrop 6-1

HILTON HEAD, S.C. --- 41st-ranked NC State women’s tennis swept all six singles matched to knock off 66th-ranked Winthrop 6-1 Wednesday.
The Wolfpack (8-2, 1-1 ACC) dropped the doubles point to Winthrop, after coming away with only one win, as Lenka Hojckova and Tatiana Illova bested the Eagles’ Alkema/Wilkinson pairing 8-4. NC State fell in the other two doubles matches to give Winthrop a 1-0 lead heading to singles.
In singles play, NC State took all six decisions, led by wins from the Pack’s two ranked players, #28 Sanaa Bhambri and #83 Sandhya Nagaraj. Bhambri defeated Elizaveta Zaytseva easily, scoring a 6-2, 6-1 win. Nagaraj battled back after dropping the first set to top Yasmine Alkema 0-6, 6-1, 6-0.
Hojckova and Illova finished 2-0 on the afternoon, as each captured wins in singles play, Hojckova winning 6-4, 6-3 over Andressa Garcia, and Illova taking a second set tiebreak 6-0, 7-6 (7-5) over Lisa Wilkinson.
Joelle Kissell rebounded from singles losses in her last two matches with a 7-5, 6-0 win against Sara Abutovic.
Tanvi Shah notched the first singles win of her career, a 6-2, 6-1 decision against Julia Breuss in the sixth spot.
NC State returns home for its next match, a Saturday tussle 25th-ranked VCU in Pullen Park beginning at 1 p.m.
