UNIVERSITY PARK, PA. --- Jess Panza's fourth-place all-around performance led NC State to a 194.725 to finish third Friday at Penn St.
The Pack (5-8, 3-1 EAGL) fell to host Penn St. and EAGL-foe Maryland, as the 11th-ranked Nittany Lions posted a 196.825 to take first place at the tri-meet, and the Terrapins notched a 195.125 to take second.
Panza's all-around showing included a third place, 9.875 beam routine, a fourth on a 9.825 vault, and a fifth place finish on a 9.85 floor exercise.
The junior's 39.300 marks the highest all-around total of the year by any Pack gymnast, and comes only one week after Panza earned the EAGL's Specialist of the Week honor.
Panza has scored 9.875 on beam in each of the Pack's last three meets, all good for season-highs for NC State.
Freshman Diahanna Ham matched Panza for the team's highest floor score, earning a 9.85 for her efforts to tie for fifth. Panza also led the Pack on vault, with junior Brooke Barr's 9.8 following closely.
Sophomore Rachel Fincham led NC State on the uneven bars, landing a 9.850 to tie for third. Fincham has strung together four-straight podium finishes on bars, dating back to a season-high 9.9 at NC State's Sweetheart Invitational on February 12.
After losing senior Brittany Vontz to injury last week, NC State will be forced to find some new talent to fill the void left by the accomplished Vontz as the season moves forward. On Friday, the Pack turned to junior Alex Williams, who delivered a 9.775 on bars, the team's second best score of the rotation.
NC State's road trip through Pennsylvania continues on Sunday at 1 p.m. as the Pack visits Pittsburgh to take on EAGL-member Pitt. Full results and a recap will be posted to GoPack.com at the close of competition.
