RALEIGH, N.C. - Junior thrower Brittany Hampton and sophomore sprinter T.J. Graham led the way for the NC State women's and men's track and field teams Friday on the first day of the adidas Raleigh Relays at the Paul Derr Track.
Hampton was first in the discus for the Wolfpack's only win of the day with a throw of 159-feet, 8-inches.The junior from Monroe, N.C., qualified for the NCAA Regionals last season in the discus after a career-best throw of 174-feet, 8-inches. She also finished fourth in the discus at the ACC Championships.
Graham, the dual-sport speedster who qualified for two sprinting events at the NCAA Indoor Championships in February, easily posted the fastest time of the day in the 100-meter dash, with a sizzling 10.50 seconds. He was nearly a tenth of a second ahead of the next fastest runner, blazing ahead of the other 108 runners competing in 15 different heats in the event.
The Raleigh native, however, is doing double-duty at the moment as a wide receiver with the NC State football team, which is in the middle of its spring drills. So Graham will miss Saturday's finals of the 100 meters and the 200-meter dash because they conflict with the Wolfpack's football practice.
Sophomore teammate Benjamin Major III also posted one of the top times in the 100 meters at 10.64 seconds and will run in Saturday's finals. He will also compete in the 200 meters and both the 4X100 and 4X400 relays.
The only meet mark that fell was in the last race of the night, as two-time defending NCAA cross country champion and NCAA record-holder Sam Chelanga of Liberty shattered the Raleigh Relay mark in the 10,000-meter race, with a time of 28:15.64, topping the old mark of 28:46.74 set by John Mortimer of the Boston Athletic Association in 2004.
In other men's events, distance runners Andrew Colley and Andy Henken finished third and fourth, respectively, in the 5,000-meter run. Colley, a redshirt freshman, posted a time of 13:56.02. Henken, a fifth-year senior in his first year of competition with the Wolfpack, finished in 13:58.95.
NC State three-time All-ACC performer Kris Kornegay-Gober was fourth in the men's high jump at 6-feet, 10 ¾-inches, followed by teammate Christian Council in seventh at 6-feet, 6 3/4-inches.
Junior Emmanuel Davis was fourth in the long jump at 23-feet, 6-inches, followed by teammates Lamont Savage in fifth place at 23-feet, 3 ½-inches and Kwame Boatwright in seventh at 22-feet, 8 ½-inches.
NC State freshman Jule Rich, participating unattached, was fourth in the men's discus with a throw of 160-feet, 3-inches.
For the women, freshman Tremanisha Taylor, participating unattached, was eighth in the women's shot put, while former ACC champion and NCAA Regional participant Lawanda Henry did not participate in the event.
Freshman Lacey Shuman and junior Danielle Adams were tied for 10th in the women's high jump at 5-feet, 5-inches, while sophomore Karimah Shepherd was sixth in the long jump at 18-feet, 8 ½-inches.
In Section II of the 5,000-meter run, freshman Halsey Merritt was second with a time of 17:29.26, with Leah Vaughn in 14th at 17:57.91.
Post-collegiate runner Lauren Bonds of the adidas Raleigh Track Club threatened the 19-year-old meet record in Section I of the 5,000 meters, but finished about five seconds short of the mark set by Gina Procaccio in 1992, finishing in a time of 16:04.83. NC State's Andie Cozzarelli was eighth in the race at 16:44.38, followed by senior Kara McKenna in 11th with a time of 17:04.54.
Action resumes on Saturday at 9:45 a.m. with the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Live results will be available at www.flashresults.com and final results from the meet will be available Saturday night on www.GoPack.com.
