Choi Shoots 66, M Golf Places 3rd at Rio Pinar

ORLANDO, Fla. - On the strength of Albin Choi's final round 6-under 66, the No. 20-ranked NC State men's golf team finished third at the Rio Pinar Invitational at Rio Pinar Country Club on Tuesday.
NC State shot an 18-hole score of 2-under 286 to finish the two-day tournament at 3-under 861 (291-284-286). The Wolfpack placed third among a field of 18 teams.
Choi finished ninth after recording his first 6-under round in his freshman year at NC State. He also fired a 66 back in the fall at the Wolfpack Invitational at Lonnie Poole Golf Course, which is a par-71 track.
Choi rebounded from a 4-over 76 in Monday's second round, and moved up 20 spots in the field with his performance today. The Toronto, Ontario, native has four top-10's and five top-20 finishes in six collegiate events.
Junior Chad Day finished strong with a 2-under 70 to place 21st overall at 1-over 217.
Senior Brandon Detweiler fell back with a 5-over 77 today to finish tied for 22nd at 2-over 218.
Sophomore Mitchell Sutton fired a 1-over 73 and finished up tied for 28th at 4-over 220.
Mark McMillen also shot a 5-over 77 Tuesday to place tied for 36th at 6-over 222.
Host UCF ran away with the team title at 23-under 841, five shots in front of second-place Liberty at 18-under 846.
Daniel Mazziotta of Florida Gulf Coast beat Robert Karlsson of Liberty on the first playoff hole for the individual medalist honor. They finished the 54-hole event at 12-under 204.
NC State has finished in the top-3 in all but one of six events in the 2010-11 season.
The Wolfpack is right back in action this weekend at the 32nd annual Schenkel Invitational. The three-day, 54-hole event takes place March 18-20 at Forest Heights Country Club, hosted by Georgia Southern University, in Statesboro, Ga.
