Swimming & Diving Drops Meet with UVa

RALEIGH, N.C. - The NC State swimming and diving team fell to Virginia on Saturday, Feb. 5, at the Willis R. Casey Aquatic Center on campus.
The Wolfpack men lost by a 164-125 margin, while the women were defeated 168-117.
The men now stand at 6-3 (3-3 ACC) on the year, while the women fall to 7-3 (3-3 ACC). The UVa men, ranked 10th nationally, improve to 8-1 (3-0 ACC), while the No. 11 women climb to 6-2 (3-0 ACC).
Ivan Kopas, Dan Forsythe, Barrett Miesfeld and Joe Martin got the men started by taking the 200-medley relay with a 1:31.77, and Brandon Kingston scored two points in the 1000 freestyle with a 9:44.36. Jonathan Boffa placed second in the 200 freestyle on a 1:40.17, while Kopas' 50.72 was good for second in the 100 backstroke. Fosythe (56.91) and Ian Bishop (57.58) took second and third respectively in the 100 breaststroke, and Mike Seiferth (1:54.15) and Miesfeld (1:55.04) went third and fourth in the 200 butterfly. Joe Martin took third in the 50 freestyle (21.00) and Hudson Rains (308.40) and Chris Arcara (273.98) placed second and third on the 1-meter dive.
Boffa (46.18) and Conor Brennan (46.53) finished third and fourth in the 100 freestyle, while Kopas (1:49.34) and Kohl Hurdle (1:51.49) placed third and fourth in the 200 backstroke. Forsythe (2:05.52) and Bishop (2:06.60) combined for seven points in the 200 breaststroke, while Kingston's 4:37.63 placed third in the 500 freestyle.
Miesfeld won the 100 butterfly on a 49.55, while Rains (331.20) and Arcara (285.15) went one and two on the 3-meter dive. Hurdle swam the fastest 400 IM on the team for the season and placed first with a 4:01.18, while Martin, Miesfeld, Boffa and Brennan used a 1:22.97 to take the 200-freestyle relay.
Christina McCann's 10:31.69 in the 1000 freestyle marked the third fastest on the roster this year, while Julianna Prim took fourth in the 200 freestyle with a 1:50.83. Jessica Ward's 1:05.45 was good for second in the 100 breaststroke, and Maggie McEnerney (2:05.77) and Jordan Paavola (2:08.82) placed fourth and fifth in the 200 butterfly. Hannah Hopkins won the 3-meter dive with a 311.55 score, while Kirstyn Shepler scored a 254.93 for second.
Erica Waters (53.27) and Meghan Thompson (53.58) both scored in the 100 freestyle, while Kaitlin Mills (2:05.83) and Bailey Woodling (2:12.03) did the same in the 200 backstroke. Ward (2:20.12) and Kelsey Liu (2:20.46) went second and third in the 200 breaststroke, while Jen Kopenitz's 5:04.29 was third in the 500 freestyle and second fastest on the team for the year. Zina Grogg's 56.98 was fastest in the 100 butterfly, and Shepler (272.78) and Hopkins (261.38) swept the 1-meter dive.
In addition to the UVa meet, several members of the Pack also competed at the College Cup in nearby Durham over the weekend. Casey Cooper and Amanda Panty each recorded all-time top-10 swims, with Cooper's 57.09 in the 100 backstroke standing eighth all time and Panty's 51.50 in the 100 freestyle placing 10th.
